Every summer for more than 30 years, the Broward County Library system has welcomed children through its doors, encouraging reading and providing hundreds of interesting programs to stimulate young minds.
Librarians understand that children who don’t read and learn during the summer fall behind in reading and math - an average of 2 ½ months. Known as the summer slide, this gap can contribute to significant setbacks in academic achievement. As a result, teachers are forced to spend 17% of the new school year re-teaching material.
The 2018 Summer Learning Program affords everyone the FREE and FUN opportunity to build reading and learning skills, as well as explore the STEM concepts of science, technology, engineering and math. All ages are encouraged to read and earn prizes as they mark their progress on a special game board. They will also have the opportunity to gain social skills, such as cooking, dancing, and yoga. This year, coding camps and hackathons are also being offered for teens.
Through new partnerships with the Broward County Public Schools and Broward Reads, the 2018 Summer Program is now the primary summer learning program for the entire county!
