Prepare for takeoff! Summer is here, and Broward’s kids are ready to explore the intergalactic worlds Broward County libraries have to offer.
Librarians understand that children who do not read and learn during the summer fall behind in reading and math - an average of 2 ½ months’ worth of learning. Known as the “summer slide,” this gap can contribute to significant setbacks in academic achievement. As a result, teachers are forced to spend 17% of the new school year re-teaching material. The Broward Public Library Foundation has committed more than $40,000 to help Broward County libraries reduce this “black hole” of learning.
The 2019 “A Universe of Stories” Summer Learning Program runs from June 1 through August 10. Many of the events for preschoolers, children, and teens will focus on space and astronomy. Participants will investigate a real-life moon rock at the Main Library and discover new universes through virtual reality demonstrations and planetarium shows. To qualify for incentives and grand prizes, attendees are encouraged to track their reading, events attended, and completed activities.
All donations will encourage personal and academic success while providing children a summer of entertainment and education. Below are a number of ways you can contribute to this enriching program. Please help the next generation of ambitious explorers reach meteoric heights.
