Ready for College

Ready for College is a free program that offers intensive training classes that are alternatives to expensive SAT or ACT test-prep courses or college preparedness courses. The program is broken into sections for either the SAT & ACT test-prep or College Readiness workshops.

Along with the Library Foundation, these programs are sponsored by Broward College, Memorial Health Care Systems, Inc., and The Harry T. Mangurian, Jr. Foundation, Inc.

SAT/ACT

Workshops for College-Bound Students

Test prep classes, now conducted online, are done in eight session increments which include practice tests and intensive test-taking strategies. These sessions focus on four components per subject: fundamentals, technique, recognition/reaction, and timing manipulation.

To build a better understanding of test preparation and the college admissions process, parents and students will be assigned homework. Parents and guardians are encouraged to have their teen attend each session and complete each homework assignment.

There are eight sessions each year for either SAT or ACT and focus on math, grammar, reading, and a full practice test.

All SAT & ACT Test Prep courses are taught by
Affordable College Solutions (ACS). Founded in 2006 by Alberto Howe, ACS partners with passionate students, parents, and organizations who believe in aggressively seeking financially sound ways to beat the SATs and ACTs. Alberto Howe is a former award-winning director of the Princeton Review of South Florida and former test room supervisor of the official SAT and ACT exams.

College Readiness Workshops

College readiness workshops run on Tuesdays from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm, with additional one-on-one office hours available for students to receive direct support and answers to their most pertinent questions.

These classes’ help students learn how to apply for scholarships and financial aid, craft essays for all their applications, boost their extracurricular resumes, and decide which majors to look into once attending college.

Each College Readiness workshop is offered by
The Scholarship Plug. This organization was founded by Mrs. Shedley Casseus Parnther, M.B.A., an award winning “B.R.A.C.E.” Advisor with over 15 years of college and financial aid planning experience. She created The Scholarship Plug with the mission to empower students and families with the information needed to successfully plan “early” in order to fund their dreams.
