Les Standiford is the author of twenty-one novels, including the New York Times best-seller Bringing Adam Home: The Abduction That Changed America, critically acclaimed works of nonfiction, a series of John Deal mysteries, and two works adapted into feature films. Standiford has received Fellowships from both the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. He is the Founding Director of the Creative Writing Program at Florida International University in Miami and director of the Writers in Paradise conference at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg. Palm Beach, Mar-a-Lago, and the Rise of America's Xanadu (Atlantic Monthly Press) tells the history of the island of Palm Beach. From the Palmettos to the mangroves, there is much to be discovered when Henry Flagler first arrives and eventually builds the Royal Poinciana Hotel (the Breakers). But the most significant figure was the Mar-A-Lago. Read about its beginnings, triumphs, and tragedies in Standiford's latest work. Booklist’s review noted, “this is an enjoyable social voyeurism for those who hanker after tales of the rich and famous, past and present.”
