The Broward Public Library Foundation was founded in 1982 to enhance the collections, programs and services of the Broward County Library beyond the means of public funding. The nonprofit Foundation is the catalyst in sparking private funding and endowments to enrich the Broward County Library system.

NIGHT OF LITERARY FEASTS

The fundraising Night of Literary Feasts will begin at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 18 with the Welcome Reception at the Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort. At the reception, the anticipated 350 guests can meet the authors, while enjoying hors d’oeuvres, a lavish silent auction, and book sales and signings. The Welcome Reception, sponsored by JM Family Enterprises, will be followed by intimate dinners with individual authors.

Proceeds support Broward County Library’s literacy programs, including the Summer Learning Program, SAT/ ACT Prep Workshops and the StoryBook Festival.

To hear the Literary Feast authors speak on moderated panels, join us for LitLIVE! on Friday, April 17 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Auditorium in the Main Library, 100 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale. At this free event, attendees can also purchase books and have them signed while meeting the authors. LITERARY FEAST AUTHORS

More than 240 guests enjoyed the 16th annual LitLUNCH!, featuring bestselling author and media powerhouse Zibby Owens.

Owens discussed her journey to becoming a podcaster, publisher, and bookstore owner, as well as themes in her recent novel, Blank .

Guests had the opportunity to bid on special raffle items, including tickets to Owens’ Totally Booked Live April event with authors in New York City, and hotel stays at Pier Sixty-Six and the Seminole Hard Rock.

Held on Feb. 20 at Pier Sixty-Six, this year’s LitLUNCH! co-chairs were Laurie M. Ernest-Jones and Marianna Seiler DeJager. Proceeds support Broward County Library literacy programs, including the Books ‘n’ Bears at the Holidays program, which was highlighted at the luncheon.

Books & Bites continues this spring with a special afternoon

featuring two authors whose latest novels explore story, place,

and resilience in distinct ways.

The event is scheduled from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 7

at Belmont Village Senior Living, Fort Laud erdale.

Guests will enjoy an engaging conversation about writing, storytelling,

and the creative journeys behind their work.

BPLF Board Welcomes

New Members

The Broward Public Library Foundation Board of Directors approved the nomination of two new members at its February meeting.

Darlyne Jean-Charles , FPL’s Senior Community Relations Specialist, leads community relations and employee engagement efforts across Miami-Dade and Broward counties. She has been an FPL employee for nearly 25 years. Darlyne received her undergraduate degree in Sociology from Barry University and an MBA from Ashford University.

Stephen Emery is a CPA and partner at Citrin Cooperman in Fort Lauderdale. He has had extensive experience working with not-for-profit organizations. Stephen received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Accounting from the University of Florida. A Leadership Broward graduate, he has served on the Audit Advisory Committee for the City of Fort Lauderdale.

One Book One Broward

Adults and kids alike are encouraged to connect with nature, culture,

and literacy through the One Book One Broward initiative.

From now through February 28, Broward County Library branches will host an array of events revolving around two featured books: The Seed Keeper by Diane Wilson and The First Blade of Sweetgrass by Suzanne Greenlaw and Gabriel Frey.

ArtLit 2026 will kick off the series of events from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 10 at the Southwest Regional Library, 16835 Sheridan St., Pembroke Pines. The fun-filled festival will focus on an imaginative journey through native wetlands through art, culture, and literature. The day will also feature performances, hands-on art activities, literature workshops, food trucks, vendors, and face painting.

Upcoming events will include an Intergenerational Family Archive Project at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center on January 21, Perspectives on Public Health at West Regional Library on February 3, a Creative Writing Workshop at North Regional/BC Library on February 28 and a variety of book discussions and story times at various branches.

Peter Pan, the Little Mermaid, and Snow White – these are among the classic storybook characters that are the inspiration for a special evening on Friday, Sept. 26 at the downtown Tower Club – Fort Lauderdale. The “Once Upon a Table – A Feast of Fairy Tales & Fables” event, which is open to the public, benefits the Broward Public Library Foundation and the Invited Employee Care Foundation, which supports Club employees and their families during times of crisis.

Speak at Books & Bites

Books & Bites will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21 at our presenting sponsor location, Belmont Village Senior Living, 1031 Seminole Dr., Fort Lauderdale. The event includes the author’s talk, light bites, book sales, and signings.

An Emmy Award-winner, Taylor uses his background in television news to help form the character of Booker Johnson, a TV reporter who solves murders. Each of Mel’s books are set in South Florida, where his characters move from the sandy beaches to the exotic and mysterious Florida Everglades. The Disclosure , published in June, is the third installment of the Booker Johnson murder series.

Mel is also the recipient of several other TV awards, including a local Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and an award from the Society of Professional Journalists. To learn more, visit MelTaylor.com .

Summer Learning at the Library

Thanks to the generosity of donors, sponsors, and supporters, thousands of children and teens participated in an exciting and successful Summer Learning Program this season.

The immersive 10-week adventure, with a “Color Our World” theme, included more than 1,400 Summer Learning events and activities that took place at a variety of branch locations June 1 through August 9. Programs included the Art for Kids Summer Series with Young At Art Children’s Museum, a Glow Show with Mad Science, and the Florida Panthers Summer Reading Tour, which featured books read by Panthers personnel and a visit from Stanley the Panther.

The Summer Learning Program encourages participants of all ages to continue to read all summer long through reading challenges, events, and activities. Youngsters are encouraged to log their reading minutes to win prizes. This summer, more than 3,200 children and teens logged more than 3.5 million minutes of reading!

The Library Foundation’s annual fundraising appeal raised funds from generous individual donors, as well as the Sylvia K. & Martin J. Yohalem Community Fund of the Community Foundation of Broward, Florida Blue, Charles F. and Esther M. Frye Foundation, JM Family Enterprises, Inc., Florida Power & Light Company, the Lasdon Family Foundation, and the Children’s Services Council of Broward County.

Conference Focuses on Children’s Stories

Award-winning mother-son literary duo Carole Boston Weatherford and Jeffrey Boston Weatherford are the headliners at the free annual Conference on Children’s Literature on Friday, Sept. 19 at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center.

Whether you're a parent, teacher, librarian, or simply a book enthusiast, this event is ideal for anyone who wants to explore the world of children's literature.

The Weatherfords have collaborated on three books, including KIN: Rooted in Hope , Carole’s verse novel illustrated by her son.

Scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Conference will also feature author and plant enthusiast Marcus Bridgewater, graphic author Amor Shah, and more.

SAT/ACT Workshops

Now that classes are back in session, students in 10th through 12th grade will be turning their attention to the all-important SAT and ACT tests that can make all the difference in college acceptance.

With funding from the Broward Public Library Foundation, Affordable College Solutions’ Alberto Howe leads a series of free SAT/ACT workshops at Broward County libraries that will help your child prepare. The workshops’ intensive sessions focus on test-taking strategies, fundamentals, and practice tests.

Registration for the next 5-part workshop series opens at 9 a.m. Sept. 15. The series will be held from Oct. 6-Nov. 3 at the South Regional Library, 7300 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines. The two Wednesday Women reading clubs are well underway with an exciting new season of books and meeting times! Participation in the Wednesday's Women Book Club is a benefit to being a Broward Public Library Foundation member at the $100 Bibliophile level or higher. Wednesday's Women groups meet regularly for friendship and stimulating conversation about the assigned book.

Mystery Book Collection Keeps Growing

Thanks to the Isabel & Stanley Rubel Family Endowment Fund, Broward mystery lovers have hundreds more mystery books to devour – from Jeffery Deaver thrillers to Raymond Chandler classics and Laura Lippman best-sellers. Interest from the fund, held within the Broward Public Library Foundation’s $15 million endowment, has provided for the purchase of more than 300 titles for the Broward County Library collection over the past two years.

The collection is housed on the second floor of the Pompano Beach Library, 50 Atlantic Blvd., Pompano Beach. Branch manager Nadine Robinson has leaned full force into the Rubel Mystery Collection with author talks, book clubs, and more.

The Rubel Mystery Lover’s Book Club featured authors Elaine Viets in June and Daniel Miller in August. Popular author Charles Todd will be featured at an in-person event at 2 p.m. Oct. 18, with award-winning mystery reviewer Oline Cogdill as a guest moderator. Library Presents 38th Annual Conference on Children's Literature

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Parents, educators, librarians, storytellers, children's authors and illustrators are invited to Broward County Library's free 38th Annual Conference on Children's Literature , held 8:30AM-5PM on Friday, September 19, 2025 at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC), 2650 Sistrunk Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311, 954-357-6282.

The Annual Conference on Children's Literature is a day-long professional development opportunity led by engaging authors and visual artists. Attendees will meet featured guests and are eligible to receive one of their signed books as a raffle prize. Lunch will be served to registered participants. The Conference is free, but registration is requested .

Award-winning guests include Marcus Bridgewater, Carole Boston Weatherford, Jeffrey Boston Weatherford, Amar Shah, Yesenia Moises, Tony Weaver Jr., Stephanie McMillan, and Chelsey Roos.

Event Description: Dr. Marie Henderson (she/her) is a planetary scientist with the University of Maryland Baltimore County and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center since 2021. As a postdoctoral research associate, Dr. Henderson studies volcanic landscapes on the Moon and Mars using an orbit-to-outcrop research methodology. She employs orbital imagery from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and the Moon Mineralogy Mapper spectroscopic data. Previously, Dr. Henderson was employed in the private sector at Malin Space Science Systems, specializing in the processing and science dissemination of images taken by the MArs Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) camera on the Mars Science Laboratory Rover. Building from experience in strategic and tactical mission operations of the Curiosity Rover and analog operation tests (JETT5/RISE2), Dr. Henderson strives to prepare astronauts and robotic missions to explore and study volcanic deposits when they return to the Moon through leading analog field campaigns to study the textural and spectral properties of volcanic pyroclasts.

A Successful 35th Annual Literary Feast

Author James Benn described Literary Feast as a “superb celebration for authors, readers, and all those who love libraries.”

The proceeds help support vital Broward County Library programs and services, including free SAT/ACT classes for high school students and children’s literacy festivals.

Alexa Lanier and the late Susie Levan were this year’s Literary Feast Co-Chairs. The event was presented by the Helen Ingham Foundation. Other top supporters included Nova Southeastern University, the Haller Foundation, JM Family Enterprises, Inc., and Ryder System, Inc.

Director's Book Club

Broward County Library Director Allison Grubbs has chosen two thought-provoking titles for her Director’s Book Club this summer. The June title is Danica Roem’s Burn the Page , a memoir by Virginia’s first openly transgender state senator. The July title is best-selling author Barbara Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead , a novel that was the co-recipient of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

It’s In the Bag

Purchase a reusable Community Bag sold during the month of May at the Winn-Dixie store at 901 N. Nob Hill Rd. in Plantation, and in June at Winn-Dixie at 941 Southwest 24th St. in Fort Lauderdale, and BPLF will receive $1 for every $2.99 reusable bag sold. It’s an easy way to be kind to the environment, while showing support of literacy programs.

Scientist in Residence Program

Know a child who is an aspiring scientist? Or do you have a fascination with the field? The North Lauderdale Saraniero Library is launching a new Scientist in Residence Program led by a diverse group of scientists who will provide interactive programming for children ages 5 and older, and for adults, too.

Funded by the Broward Public Library Foundation, the program is designed to provide opportunities for high-quality connected learning activities, mentorship, and community building through citizen science. Two teams of scientists will conduct the programming. The first team is led by Dr. Neymi Mignocchi, program director and founder of Eye of Scientist. Kristen Hoss, the executive director of Youth Environmental Alliance, will lead the second team.

Adult programming begins June 10; children’s programming on June 14. Activities are scheduled to run through September 20.

Mystery Books Have a New Home in Pompano Beach

Creating a family’s legacy is one of the Library Foundation’s greatest honors. We witnessed this recently at the Opening Celebration of the Rubel Family Mystery Collection at the Pompano Beach Library and Cultural Center. Guests included Laurence and Howard Rubel, Library Director Allison Grubbs, Pompano Beach Mayor Rex Hardin, Mystery Critic and Reviewer Oline Cogdill and Mystery Authors Charles Todd, Alan Orloff, and Neil S. Plakcy.

The Rubel Family created the Isabel & Stanley Rubel Family Endowment Fund, named after the matriarch and patriarch of the family, as a way to honor their late mother’s passing in 2021. Isabel and Stanley Rubel were long-time residents of Pompano Beach who raised three sons, founded a successful business in the area, and supported their community and local library. As both parents were avid mystery readers, the sons chose to dedicate the fund to building a collection of mystery books to be housed at the Pompano Beach Library.

Along with this new collection, the Fund will also support mystery-themed programs and author talks.

Thank you to the three Rubel sons, Howard, Matthew, and Laurence, for their generosity, along with family and friends across the country who helped fund the Isabel & Stanley Rubel Family Endowment Fund.

The Isabel & Stanley Rubel Family Mystery Book Collection

Honored guests will include members of the Rubel Family, Broward Public Library Foundation members, dignitaries, and friends of the Rubel Family.

The event will include refreshments and mystery themed activities for all attendees.

The Broward Public Library Foundation has the pleasure of working with the family of the late Isabel & Stanley Rubel to create this endowment fund in their memory. Their three sons Howard, Matthew and Laurence recall their parents' love of mystery novels, which brought them into the Pompano Beach Library regularly. In the creation of the fund, Howard Rubel expressed how his parents “had great vision to see the possibilities of Pompano Beach” and that the family is “delighted to give back to a community that Isabel and Stanley joined over 65 years ago.”

The Isabel & Stanley Rubel Family Endowment Fund has been created through gifts from friends, family, and community members. Income generated by the endowment fund is being used to promote new and upcoming mystery authors. New books will be added to the Broward County Library collection and author talks will be hosted at the Pompano Beach Library.

To date, the fund has purchased over 30 volumes for the library. Plans are in place to add to the collection in 2024 and in the years ahead.

On Saturday, April 13, the Broward Public Library Foundation held its 35th annual Literary Feast with 10 acclaimed authors: James R. ‘New Couple in 5B’ a modern haunted house mystery with layers of suspense

Dark suspense has been a hallmark of best-seller Lisa Unger’s novels, delving into the fears that turn seemingly ordinary situations into frightening situations that can make one doubt what is reality or imagination.

Unger’s “The New Couple in 5B” uses the haunted house trope to examine a marriage, friendship, evil and even New York real estate in a plot that steadily builds, offering numerous well-placed misdirections that ramp up the suspense. “The New Couple in 5B” pays homage to Ira Levin’s “Rosemary’s Baby,” Daphne du Maurier’s “Rebecca” and myriad ghost stories. To that mix, Unger adds a smidgeon of the film “Gaslight” and the TV series “Only Murders in the Building.” Unger takes each of these aspects to create her own unique story.

Rosie and Chad Lowan are struggling New Yorkers. She had a best-seller a few years ago but that money has run out. Chad is an actor who’s landed a few parts in plays but keeps looking for that big break, even in a lucrative commercial. They spent their first year of marriage caring for Chad’s uncle, Ivan, who recently died. The couple is surprised that Ivan leaves them his luxury apartment in the historic Windermere building in the Murray Hill neighborhood. Although they can barely afford the monthly assessment, the apartment could sell for millions.

Still, their luck seems to be changing so the couple decides to stay to become “The New Couple in 5B.” Chad gets a role in what looks to be a long-running TV series. Rosie receives a lucrative contract to write a book wrapped around the lurid history of the Windermere, which includes numerous deaths, suicides and murders since it was constructed during the 1920s on the site of a burned church. The residents, most of whom have lived there for decades, readily welcome the couple, especially next-door neighbors Charles and Ella Aldridge, with whom they became friendly during Ivan’s illness.

But nothing is ever free. Ivan’s estranged daughter, Dana, didn’t even bother to see her father when he was dying, and now she’s threatening to sue the couple because she expected to inherit the apartment. The long-time doorman, Abi, never seems to leave, and, creepily, voice-activated intercoms in each apartment allow him to be called without using a phone or a buzzer. Cameras are all over the place.

Rosie’s anxiety mounts when she begins to see people who don’t exist. As Rosie researches the Windermere’s history, more deaths occur, as do other strange events. Rosie begins to wonder if the building is haunted, “some energy that encourages dark happenings … or broken people doing horrible things to each other.”

A glimpse at the lives of the couple who owned the apartment before Ivan enhances the plot. Rosie’s life and the building’s history are wrapped in a “helix of choice and chance.”

Modern haunted houses are a current trend in mystery fiction, using the fear factor to invigorate the locked-room mystery. While dire events happen away from the Windermere, its clutches reach across the city.

Unger keeps her plot off kilter as she alternates from making Rosie an unreliable narrator to a thoughtful, imaginative writer who is correct about her misgivings about the Windermere and its residents.

“The New Couple in 5B” is the Florida-based Unger’s 21st novel (22nd if you count her one novella) and continues her high standards for richly layered suspense.

Lisa Unger will be among the 10 authors featured during the Literary Feast, sponsored by the Broward Public Library Foundation to raise money for literacy programs. Unger (“The New Couple in 5B”) along with Alex DeMille (“Blood Lines”), Jonathan Santlofer (“The Lost Van Gogh”) and James R. Benn (“Proud Sorrows) will appear during LitLive’s free mystery fiction panel at 7:30 p.m. April 12 in the Horvitz Auditorium at NSU Art Museum, One East Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. The panel discussions also will include fiction beginning at 5:30 p.m. and nonfiction beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Books 'n' Bears at the Holidays

A Feast for the Mind Reading Challenge

Are you an avid reader? Do you know other avid readers? Then you should join the Library Foundation’s “A Feast for the Mind Reading Challenge.” Gather your friends or book club members to form a team and participate in our inaugural social media-based contest.

The Reading Challenge is centered around the April 12, 2024 Literary Feast LitLIVE! event, which will feature nationally recognized authors speaking at free panel discussions. The Foundation will announce book titles from January to March to all participating teams. As they are announced, teams will read as many of the books as they can, then post their reviews online with a special hashtag to score points.

Points will be accumulated based on the number of books read per team member, with bonus points awarded for social media engagement! First, second and third place winners will be assigned with special recognition given to the winners at our annual LitLIVE! event. Prizes may include wine and dessert at your next book club meeting, tickets to the Night of Literary Feasts Welcome Reception, and recognition from the stage.

Thank you to Leadership Broward Class XLII for selecting this as one of their class projects. The Community Project Group, the “Book Worms,” will steer the Reading Challenge in the months ahead.

New Scholarships for Career

Online High School

The Broward Public Library Foundation and Broward College are partnering to support the 2023-2024 Career Online High School (COHS) enrollment class. Broward College will sponsor seven new scholarships for students in this life-changing program.

Through Broward County Library, COHS offers adults ages 19 and older the chance to earn an accredited high school diploma and a career certificate. The program is self-paced and 100% online, allowing individuals who are working, parents, or both to find the time needed to achieve their dream of graduating high school and opening up new career pathways for themselves.

In addition to funding the new scholarships, Broward College will also be providing hands-on workshops for all students enrolled in the program. Workshop topics will focus on achieving successful career transitions, mapping a pathway to further education, and how to apply for scholarships and financial aid.

Remembering Their Literary Legacies

Summer Learning Program

Through the generosity of more than 80 donors, this year’s Summer Learning Program was a great success.

The theme, “All Together Now,” was a celebration of the differences that make each of us unique. The library offered more than 90 art and writing, cultural awareness, STEM and personal wellness programs focused on helping youth learn about new cultures, other countries and different ways of life.

A large part of the Summer Learning Program is the Reading Challenge. Children and families are asked to read books throughout the summer and log their minutes read in order to win prizes and qualify for grand prizes, such as a new bicycle or theme part tickets. This summer, 2,500 children and teens logged more than 3 million minutes of reading!

The Library Foundation’s annual fundraising appeal raised $39,000 from individual donors, as well as the Community Foundation of Broward, the Charles F. & Esther M. Frye Foundation, JM Family Enterprises, Inc., PNC Grow Up Great, Florida Power & Light Company, and the Children’s Services Council of Broward County.

During the Broward County Library's Summer Learning Program , kids of all ages are invited to compete in reading challenges to win great prizes from local organizations such as the Museum of Discovery and Science, Florida Panthers, Shake Shack and more. The 2023 theme, “All Together Now”, includes big topics such as unity, kindness, mental health, growth mindset, empathy, building community, friendship and more.

From June through August, participants log the books they read and join the library for fun, interactive programs that encourage reading, learning, and a better understanding of one another.

The Summer Learning Program offers more than 3,500 activities and programs in libraries across Broward County. All are aimed at helping children keep an active mind, read more, and stay engaged in learning activities while out of school. The 18th Annual Children’s BookFest is the official kick-off to the Summer Learning Program (SLP) and is held on the last Saturday before school ends. Frank Morrison: Award-winning children’s book illustrator and the artist for this summer's theme, All Together Now. Orisirisi African Folklore: Orisirisi (O-re-she-re-she) was created in 1986 by a husband and wife team comprised of Nigerian born folk-artist Adetutu Harrell and Don Harrell a music scholar and performing artist, who is a life-long veteran of stage and screen, Orisirisi (a Yoruba word pronounced o-re-she-re-she) utilizes varied artistic forms to impart folk-knowledge and experiences to and for their audiences.

Janis McDavid: Grammy nominated singer/songwriter will lead children and their loved ones in mindful movement. Ms. Janis uses drums, scarves, parachutes, and more to keep your children engaged.

KidVision Pre-K's Ms. Penny : Get entertained and educated in this fun program focusing on self-care, health and empathy.

Broward Public Library Foundation to Host Annual Literary Feast

Twelve nationally known authors, including James Grippando, Alvin Hall, Matthew Quick and Deanna Raybourn, will be this year’s special guests at the Broward Public Library Foundation’s 34th annual Literary Feast 2023.

Literary Feast Chairs Amanda Doering and Beth Malkin are working with more than 30 volunteers and generous dinner hosts to make this event a success.

On Friday evening March 31, the authors will speak on panels about their books and the writing process during LitLIVE!, an event open to the public at the Barnes & Noble, 2051 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale. The Fiction panel, moderated by Gail Bulfin, will be held from 5:30 to 6:15; the Mystery panel, moderated by Oline Cogdill, will be from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.; and the Nonfiction panel, moderated by Mim Harrison, will be from 7:30 to 8:15 p.m. Authors will sign books purchased that night, with a portion of the sales benefiting the Library Foundation.

Families with children of all ages are invited to the 21st Annual Storybook Festival, from 10AM to 4:30PM, Saturday, November 19, 2022 , at Southwest Regional Library, 16835 Sheridan Street in Pembroke Pines, 33331, 954-357-6580.

StoryBook Festival provides a magical experience to encourage a love of reading and libraries through presentations by the finest storytellers and literature-based performance groups. Creativity and learning are nurtured through math and logic games, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) activities and arts and crafts presented by the City of Pembroke Pines Parks and Recreation. Children are encouraged to come in costume.

Vet Fest Offers a Month of Programs, Celebrations and Activities

Library events will honor, entertain

and inform our local veterans

Broward County Library's Vet Fest 2022 is now a full month of programs and activities that honor veterans and offer military benefits awareness and entertainment for the whole family.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, almost 80,000 veterans live in Broward County. Agencies serving these veterans report that many fail to use their benefits for housing, health, legal services or employment because they are unaware of what is available to them, earned by their service. A key component of Vet Fest is informing veterans of free or low-cost education and job training resources, such as those offered at Broward County Library, and from government and community agencies.

A variety of programs, celebrations and activities take place at library branches throughout Broward and at the Reverend Samuel Delevoe Memorial Park adjacent to the African American Research Library and Cultural Center. Participating library branches include Margate Catharine Young Branch, North Regional/Broward College Library, Weston Branch, Deerfield Beach Percy White Branch, Century Plaza Leon Slatin Branch, and Main Library. Special guests include author and veteran Alex Duran in Margate Branch, poet and veteran Brian Turner in Weston Branch, the Senior Moments Unforgettable Band at the Deerfield Beach Branch, and also in Deerfield, a graphic novel discussion and art lesson from Cory Luab.

Veteran-themed programs include movies, children's storytime, visiting experts, Anime Club book discussion and giveaway, a Creation Station Vet Fest edition, and how-to information on finding and applying for veteran's benefits.

Saturday, November 19, from 11AM to 2PM , is Veterans Family Day at Reverend Samuel Delevoe Memorial Park, a collaboration between Broward County Library, Broward County Parks and Recreation, and the Broward County Elderly and Veterans Services Division. The event is a community-wide outdoor festival that includes music, free food, face painting, a magic show, and vendor and information tables.

The 2022 Conference on Children's Literature "Find Your Voice", is scheduled for Friday, September 23, 2022 at the Main Library, 100 South Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301.

This is an all day event full of excellent and engaging creators. This annual Conference is free to attend and open to educators of all kinds - librarians, teachers, and parents are all welcome. Participants will leave inspired and motivated to bring the power of story to the families and children they work with.

This year's special guests are: New York Times best selling children's author Karma Wilson , 2022 Read for the Record author Antwan Eady , Crystal Kite Award and Florida Book Award winning author Kerry O’Malley Cerra , award-winning author of middle grade books Sherri Winston , Edgar® award-winning and best-selling author Christina Diaz Gonzalez , and New York Times and USA Today-bestselling author Jen Calonita .

Featured Author Bios:

Karma Wilso n is a New York Times best selling children's author of over 40 books, including the bestselling Bear and Little Pip books illustrated by Jane Chapman, One Day in the Middle of the Bog illustrated by Joan Rankin, and many other award-winning picture books. Karma is renowned for her ability to inspire young readers not only with her picture books but teaching them the basics of writing and rhyme. Her second novel, Hear Me, publishes in September 2022. Kerry lives in South Florida with her family and two poorly behaved rescue-dogs.

Sherri Winston is an award- winning author of middle grade books President of the Whole Fifth Grade, President of the Whole Sixth Grade, Jada Sly, Artist & Spy, The Sweetest Sound, and The Kayla Chronicles. Ms. Winston, a native of Michigan, spent several years as a newspaper columnist and journalist for the Sun-Sentinel newspaper. She was the recipient of the Clarion Award for journalists, as well as winner of a journalism fellowship at the University of Michigan. Winston is also a three-time nominee for the Pulitzer Prize in Commentary for her weekly lifestyle column. She lives with her family in Florida and is a lover of cupcakes, cooking shows and spy movies.

Leadership Broward Foundation Hosts Successful Fun Lunch

Six business, community and civic leaders were recently honored during the annual Fun Lunch hosted by Leadership Broward Foundation.

“We are so thrilled that this year’s Fun Lunch was the most successful ever,” said Jamie Wasserman of Shutts & Bowen, who co-chaired the event with Whitney Dutton of Dutton Real Estate Services and Kate Goldman of Baptist Health South Florida. “Funds raised during the Fun Lunch benefit the outstanding leadership, educational and community programs of Leadership Broward.”

Electronic maps tell where to turn and when, but they sacrifice the soul and beauty of paper maps. Antique maps guided sailors, often showing where sea monsters might reside. Maps — free or inexpensive —available at gas stations got people where they were going, though once unfolded they were near impossible to refold.

“Cartography, at its heart, was about defining one’s place in the world by creating charts and measurements…. that everything could be mapped . . . and thereby understood,” says Nell Young, the heroine of “The Cartographers,” the near perfect second novel by Peng Shepherd.

‘Violin Conspiracy’ hits right notes

Brendan Slocumb hits all the right notes in his engrossing debut about a young Black man whose natural talent for music has become the only way to secure his future. “The Violin Conspiracy” works as a well-plotted heist novel, a look at racism, the music world and a coming-of-age tale.

Growing up in Charlotte, N.C., Ray McMillian discovered his musical talent early, although he received little support for his gift. His single mother demanded he quit high school and get a job to help support her and his twin siblings. His high school music teacher refused to acknowledge his talent, forcing him to use the school’s most beat-up violin. When he landed a few jobs playing for weddings and other functions, he often was humiliated by the racists who hired him without knowing he was Black.

The 12th annual LitLUNCH event featuring New York Times bestselling author Fiona Davis will begin at 11:15 a.m. on Friday, March 18, 2022, in the Mary N. Porter Riverview Ballroom at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale. Literary Feast Returns to In-Person after a 3 Year Hiatus

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Ten notable authors will be the featured guests at the Broward Public Library Foundation’s Literary Feast 2022, the 33nd celebration of books and writers, on April 1-2, 2022. The Literary Feast 2022 Presenting Sponsor is the Helen Ingham Foundation.

Literary Feast Chair Beth Malkin is working with numerous volunteers and dinner hosts on the Literary Feast weekend events.

It’s wonderful to have Literary Feast return as an in-person event this year,” said Beth Malkin. “We have 10 fascinating authors joining us at our fundraising Night of Literary Feasts and the free LitLIVE! event. This will be a special weekend for everyone who loves books and values spending time with authors. I’m so pleased that the dollars raised will go to support many valuable programs at Broward County Library, including the Summer Learning Program. We are proud to support this fantastic place that has been a great resource for our three boys for the past 18 years.

Proceeds support a variety of Broward County Library literacy programs for children and adults, including the Summer Learning Program, Children’s BookFest, and SAT/ACT Workshops for high school students.

During the event, there will be opportunity for book purchases and signings, and a percentage of all sales will benefit the Foundation. Authors will give brief remarks followed by questions from the audience.

A Night of Literary Feasts’ Welcome Reception, underwritten by JM Family Enterprises, will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Bahia Mar Fort Lauderdale Beach Commodore Ballroom (801 Seabreeze Boulevard). The reception includes an open bar, hors d'oeuvres, book sales and signings with all 10 authors, and an outstanding silent auction. At 7:30 p.m., guests depart for intimate dinners featuring an author of their choice hosted in private homes or upscale restaurants.

Book review: Two young women, two New York eras weave through ‘The Magnolia Palace’

Two young women in two eras separated by nearly 50 years try to survive in New York City in Fiona Davis’ sixth fascinating novel, “The Magnolia Palace.” It’s a story that melds history, wealth, art and family bonds set against the background of the Frick Collection at the Henry Clay Frick House.

Using the modeling world and how it has changed, yet also remains the same through the decades, allows Davis also to explore the struggles of young women to be taken seriously while adding an unvarnished look at the wealthy in “The Magnolia Palace.”

Book review: ‘Notes on an Execution’ turns on the women in serial killer’s orbit

In her second novel, literary agent and author Danya Kukafka distills the serial killer subgenre — always a metaphor for the breakdown of society and justice — into a masterful look at a murderer’s origins and the women affected by these crimes.

“Notes on an Execution” expertly delves into the choices — good, bad, disastrous, successful — made by the various characters. Kukafka is wisely more interested in character studies than in violence.

Boca Raton author M.E. Browning smoothly uses the police procedural to explore how Det. Jo Wyatt handles the vagaries of family — her own family, her police family and the family of 11-year-old Lena Flores, who disappeared after attending the fair in Echo Valley, Colorado.

The second novel in Browning’s new series, “Mercy Creek” gains its strength from its tight plot and realistic characters.

Unlike her self-centered, wild 16-year-old sister, Marisa, Lena is the good daughter of her divorced parents, Lucero and Tilda. She’s the one with good grades, is polite to her elders and an animal lover.

New mysteries: Teen actor’s big break turns frightening, and Miami family dynamics get stirred up

Alan Orloff, who has received numerous awards and nominations for his private investigator novels, ventures into the young adult (YA) market with a rousing, character-driven story about a 16-year-old actor whose latest role puts him in danger. While YA novels are geared for ages 13 to 18, adult readers will find much to like in “I Play One on TV” for its plotting, strong friendships and look at how a teen straddles adulthood while still a kid. Teenage angst? A little, but mainly Orloff shows normal, well-balanced teens who’ve found their happy, safe place in theater.

Dalton Black has been building a career as an actor since he was in second grade — school productions, a few community-theater shows and a couple of lucrative national commercials. He’s just had his big break playing the killer in “High School Hitman,” an episode of the true crime TV series “Teen Killers.” His role as Homer Lee Varney, who murdered a classmate, is earning Dalton accolades and a role in the sequel. He’s also been able to get speaking roles for his two best friends, Trinity Thomas and Miguel “Patch” Gutierrez.

Literary Feast Is Postponed Until Spring 2022

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Broward Public Library Foundation has announced the postponement of its annual fundraising event, Literary Feast, until Saturday, April 9, 2022. Originally scheduled for October 16, 2021, the event is postponed because of the recent increase in both COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations within Florida.

"We are concerned for the health and safety of our authors, guests, and dinner hosts," said Broward Public Library Foundation Executive Director Dorothy Klein. "By waiting six months, we are hopeful that everyone can fully enjoy the weekend of book-and-author events."

In the spring, more than 300 attendees are expected to attend the 34th annual Literary Feast, which will feature 12-14 nationally known authors. The Welcome Reception will be held in the Commodore Ballroom of Bahia Mar Fort Lauderdale Beach, 801 Seabreeze Blvd., followed by dinners hosted privately in the Fort Lauderdale area. The Presenting Sponsor is the Helen Ingham Foundation and the Welcome Reception sponsor is JM Family Enterprises.

The Library Foundation has also postponed its popular panel discussion, LitLIVE!, until Friday, April 8, 2022 at participating Barnes & Noble locations. This event will be open to the public and books will be sold and signed following the discussion.

Allison Grubbs Named New Director of Broward County Library

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Allison Grubbs has been named the new Director for the Broward County Libraries Division. She has held the position of Interim Director since February 2021, after joining Broward County Library (BCL) in June 2019 as Libraries Division Assistant Director.

Ms. Grubbs brings more than a decade of public library experience to her new role, coming to BCL from Washington State where she led Public Services at the Timberland Regional Library, which has a jurisdiction of five counties.

From festivals to virtual presentations, cities throughout South Florida will be honoring and celebrating Juneteenth.

Recognized annually on June 19, the holiday honors the abolition of slavery in the United States and marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 with news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were now free — two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation that had become official Jan. 1, 1863, according to Juneteenth.com .
